President’s Message: Welcome back! I hope you had an opportunity to connect with friends and family and recharge yourself over the summer. Last year, we saw educators throughout the state unite and fight for their students, services and working conditions. We saw language and newcomer programs within SFUSD once again being cut. TACT has been meeting with the superintendent and other district leaders to review our overall services and advocate for data-driven and transparent decision-making that involves the community and educators on the front lines. Additionally, TACT has been collaborating with community groups to help ensure that SFSU’s Cantonese Bilingual Authorization Program continues to offer classes and put qualified educators into bilingual classrooms.
TACT Retreat @ Chinese Historical Society On Saturday, August 1st, TACT members met at Chinese Historical Society of America in Chinatown to plan for this upcoming school year. AAAA and TACT are co-sponsoring a Candidate’s Forum on Tuesday, September 29th from 5:30-8pm @YMCA Chinatown. Meet candidates who are running for a seat on the SF Board of Education. Ask your questions and hear about issues that impact our community. See flyer here.
Join TACT members on Saturday, Sept. 19th for 1990 Institute’s Roots & Wings Youth Symposium. It was an amazing success last year and they are doing it again. Attend workshops, meet and network with hundreds of Asian American youth, educators and families. Register here.
TACT’s next TTT (Teachers Teaching Teachers) Professional Development event has been tentatively scheduled for Sat., October 17th from 8:30-12pm. Here are our 3 primary focus:
Space and time for Chinese Language teachers to collaborate (Cantonese/Mandarin, K-12). We plan to hold space for all grade levels.
Social studies integration, especially for language learners.
Presentation of lessons for Distance Between: Stories of Refuge, Return, and Remembering. This is a multidisciplinary curriculum and performance project that brings refugee narratives into classrooms through the voices of first-, second-, and third-generation artists. Commissioned performances will be paired with standards-aligned lesson plans, a professional development workshop, and school assemblies to connect educators and students with stories of displacement, resilience, and belonging.
